    Honestly, Jin's way of learning English is my way of learning Japanese. Mind you, I've been into Japanese culture since 2007-2008, so I've been soaking up dramas, anime, and variety shows for several years up until I got into college. If learning through books and study isn't getting through to you or it's just not your learning style, watching and listening to tv and music with subtitles is the way to go. Eventually you'll pick up enough to be able to ditch the subtitles and figure your way around with just listening. And repeating what you hear also helps tons.
