Following the story of Kawamura Shunsuke (Nakajima Yuto), a very likeable and successful corporate worker about to be married. After a party his colleagues threw for him in celebration of his marriage, he gets into an accident and falls into a manhole. With limited resources to escape, he utilizes his smartphone to get help, resulting in an online frenzy that snowballs into madness.
Despite following a familiar format revolving around a protagonist stuck in a claustrophobic space for most of the film, ‘Manhole’ was able to be engaging and intriguing until the end. It also offered social commentary and satire on today’s use of social media and technology without being preachy in its approach. In fact, it simply embedded these themes in the narrative without fully zooming in on them which added to the straighforward immersion the film offers. Yuto’s performance was also impressive throughout the film especially near the end during the film’s twist reveal (no spoilers tho!).
Overall, it was a pretty solid film with good pacing and fair entertainment value.
