It was a scene that changed my view of sumo. It is also a surprise that he could even do that and how well! This is a heartbreaking scene, as much as it is exciting to see his heroic effort for the child short-lived joy for a tricycle, because he becomes practically crippled after this fight. He further strains his arm, so instead of healing he will have pain and difficulty all his life when it comes to moving. It is an amazing film, especially since it shows the whole circle. It's about a man who is lost in his vices from whom emerges the man who redeems himself and becomes an examplary parent. I highly recommend it to everyone. This film shows his range of acting.
People who have not seen Mifune's early work, really fail to appreciate the range and depth of emotion he can convey. I particularly enjoy him in sympathetic roles, or seeing him portray a character who is flawed. Or, somehow has foreknowledge of his own impending doom.
